Ductile iron and cast steel can both serve demanding mechanical applications, but they are different material families. Selecting between them from a single tensile-strength number can overlook toughness, temperature, joining and the geometry of the component. The comparison should begin with the duty the casting must perform.
Read the grade and condition together
Ductile iron contains graphite in a nodular form within a metallic matrix. Cast steel has a different composition and microstructural basis. Within each family, grade and heat treatment can change performance substantially, so a general family name is not a complete material requirement.
Compare specified properties in the relevant condition and test context. Values from different specimen arrangements or section sizes should not be treated as automatically representative of the same component.
Service loading is broader than a static test
Impact, cyclic loading and low-temperature duties can make properties other than tensile strength decisive. The governing design requirements should establish what evidence is needed. Neither material should be selected solely because a catalog presents a higher headline number.
A component’s section arrangement also matters. The designer and foundry should discuss whether the proposed material and route can deliver the required properties in the regions that carry load.
Consider the manufacturing operations after casting
Machining, heat treatment and any joining or repair obligations influence the route. Welding expectations in particular should be discussed for the actual material rather than assumed from experience with a different grade.
If a redesign changes the material, inspect the consequences for wall thickness, local stiffness, mating components and surface protection. Equivalent outer dimensions do not necessarily preserve the behavior of the original assembly.
Approve a substitution as an engineering change
A proposal to replace cast steel with ductile iron, or the reverse, should identify the exact grades and the basis for suitability. The purchase specification must then be updated consistently with the approved design decision.
